Although at first glance, roulette may look like a complicated game with all the numbers and different sections but it is fact fairly straightforward. The wheel will feature red and black slots with the numbers 1 to 36 in them with a green slot for zero. American roulette will have two green slots for zero and double zero. Between 1 – 10 and 19 – 28, odd numbers are red and even numbers are black. From 11 – 18 and 29 – 36, even numbers are red and odd numbers black and will adhere to the following sequence.

In roulette, there are many different betting combinations all of which have different odds and pay-outs for winning. You can bet on a single number, split it between a few numbers or bet on groups of numbers. The more numbers covered, the better chance of getting a win, however this also means lower pay-outs. The many betting combinations of roulette can be divided into three categories. Inside bets, outside bets and call bets.
Inside and outside betting are a need to know. These will be found on all roulette tables and are the basics of the game. Call bets are generally just with European roulette for what is known as the race track. These are usually for the more experienced gambler but can be a really fun bet once you wrap your head around it.
Inside bets are the bets placed on the numbers themselves. This can be done directly on one number or split between a few numbers. The table below will outline the different bets and which numbers they cover.
As you can see, there are still more sections on the layout. These too are for placing bets and can also be divided into three categories.
Even chance bets:
❖ Red or black – Bet on the colour of the winning number
❖ Odd or even – Bet if the winning number will be odd or even
❖ 1-18 or 19-36 – Bet if the winning number will be a high or low number
On the layout, the dozens will appear as 1st 12, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12. You are betting on whether you think the winning number will be between 1 – 12, 13 – 24 or 25 – 36.
Also covering 12 numbers, you can bet that the winning number will be in the chosen vertical column. For example, covering 1, 4, 7, 10 and so on down to 34.
Technically called announced bets, but most commonly known as calls bets and are basically bets that you will announce to the dealer, not to worry though, these can also be found online. Call bets are specifically for French or European roulette and can be split into 2 categories, French bets and neighbour bets. You will also need to be familiar with the racetrack. The racetrack looks like this with the numbers showing in the order as they are on the wheel.
❖ Le Tiers Du Cylindre
Meaning third of the wheel and more simply known as Tier, covers 12 numbers from 27 to 33 on the wheel.
Numbers covered when betting on Tier are 5, 8, 10, 11, 13, 16, 23, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36.
This is a 6-piece bet, meaning you will need 6 chips to bet Tier and one chip will be placed on each of the following splits 5/8, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30 and 33/36.
This covers 8 numbers, in between the other two sections on both sides of the wheel. Numbers covered when betting on Orphelins are 1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31 and 34.

❖ Voisons du Zero
This is the largest section covering 17 numbers, with a translation meaning neighbours of zero. Numbers covered when betting on Voisons du Zero are 0, 2, 3, 4, 7, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 29, 32 and 35.

A neighbour bet is a call bet that will cover 5 numbers, it is betting on a number and the two neighbouring numbers either side as on the wheel/racetrack. A minimum of 5 chips will be needed, each casino will also have their own minimums for call bets, so it accounts for one chip straight up on each of the 5 number. For example, if you were to bet on 5 and the neighbours, your bet would cover 23, 10, 5, 24 and 16.
